This Week's Devotional Scripture: Kicking an addiction!!

It is disheartening to note that most youths are getting addicted to alcohol and
drugs in search of fun. The situation is made worse by the easily available drugs,
cheaper alcohol and the publicity being given to those struggling with addiction.
Unfortunately, some have resorted to crime to finance their drug or alcohol habits
resulting in increased drug or alcohol related crime.

The fun that drugs and alcohol bring is short lived and most of the time ends up in
regret, wasted lives and destroyed families. On the other hand, the Holy Spirit
offers greater joy (Ephesians 5: 18 – 19) and peace (Romans 14: 17) continuously
and never fails.

If that’s the case why then are thousands of people still hooked on drugs? The
answer to the above question is summed up in the first part of Hosea 4: 6, “my
people are destroyed from lack of knowledge.” Because of ignorance thousands of
people are in bondage from the desires to satisfy their addiction, the lust of the
flesh.

It is however, the duty of every disciple to ensure that people around us do not die
in ignorance. We should proclaim that Jesus came to set the captives free (Isaiah
61:1) so that no one should be bound by an addiction any more. For “if the Son
sets you free, you will be free indeed.”(John 8:36). If Jesus Christ delivers you from
an addiction, you will surely be set free.

Have you ever asked yourself why some people who have gone for rehab to kick
their addictions always find themselves in the same place? It’s because the root
cause of the addiction, which is the lust of the flesh, hasn’t been dealt with. The
spirit behind the addiction cannot be dealt with through rehab or any other carnal
means. Only the full submission to Jesus Christ offers the best remedy. By
accepting Jesus Christ into your life, and allowing the Holy Spirit to work through
you, any habit or addiction finds no place in your life.

The abundant life that Jesus promises in John 10: 10 means fullness of joy,
health, love, relations, resources etc. The fun which you used to experience for a
few hours through alcohol and drugs, you now have every day in abundant joy.
What more would you want!? Would you tread that for anything else? Absolutely not!

For those of you addicted to alcohol / drugs or have a close relative in bondage,
Jesus Christ will never fail you. If you haven’t accepted Jesus Christ into your life I
invite you to say the prayer of salvation and contact us for help.
